Patch Note Rundown: 5.5

By Helmight

Hey everyone! It's time for another patch note rundown. As always, I'll be tl;dr-ing the changes that came up this patch, giving brief insight as to why they happened, and picking out the highlights. With the release of 5.5, we've got a bunch of buffs for tank junglers and a few other long-suffering champions, in addition to a few minor nerfs on popular LCS champs. Let's dive into the changes, shall we?

Big Changes

 Tank jungler buffs
With a jungle full of blind monks, Void burrowers and Demacian princes, tanks have struggled to keep up in competitive play. This is due to a few reasons, but most notably because the enchantment tanks most usually buy - Juggernaut - didn't actually help them clear any faster. This meant that champions like Zac and Nautilus were vastly outstripped by fighters like Lee Sin in both clear speed and ganking presence. To compensate, we have a slew of minor buffs for tanks and a brand-new enchantment to replace Juggernaut.

  • Gragas
    • Base mana increased.
    • W's damage cap against monsters increased.
  • Nautilus
    • W's damage reduced, but health ratio increased.
    • E's cooldown and cost reduced, but slow duration and AP ratio also reduced.
  • Shyvana
    • E's bonus damage against a marked target increased.
  • Skarner
    • Q's base damage and bonus damage based on Crystal Energy stacks increased.
    • E's damage increased.
  • Volibear
    • Half of W's cooldown is refunded if used on a monster.
  • Zac
    • W improved so that its cooldown is always reduced when a chunk is picked up.
    • E's knockback duration increased.
  • New Item: Bami's Cinder
    • Recipe: Ruby Crystal + 600 gold (1000 gold total)
    • Health: 300.
    • Unique Passive: Immolate. Deals magic damage to nearby enemies when in combat.
    • Replaces Giant's Belt in the recipe for Sunfire Cape and builds into the jungler enchantment Cinderhulk.

Trundle
Of course, Riot would be remiss in buffing all these tanks without buffing their natural predator as well. Though the Trundle changes in this patch are relatively minor, they do generally improve his quality of life and help him keep pace with his opponents.

  • King's Tribute (Passive)
    • Range increased from 1000 to 1400.
  • Frozen Domain (W)
    • Healing amplification increased from 8/11/14/17/20% to 20% at all ranks.
  • Subjugate (R)
    • Fixed a bug that caused Subjugate to only steal 36% of the target's Armor and Magic Resistance instead of 40%

New Item: Luden's Echo
With the removal of Deathfire Grasp a couple patches back, a mage's options of 120 ability power items were reduced to just two. Luden's Echo is meant to fill the void and gives movement-focused, spell-slingy mages another item to work with.

  • Recipe: Needlessly Large Rod + Aether Wisp + 650 gold (total cost: 3100 gold)
  • Grants 120 ability power and 7% movement speed.
  • Unique passive: Grants charges upon moving or casting. At 100 stacks, the next spell hit expends all charges to deal 100 (+.15 per level) bonus magic damage to up to four targets on hit. Applies spell effects like Rylai's Crytal Scepter or Will of the Ancients.
