Game of the Day: compLexity versus Curse

By Helmight

Everyone who’s ever played League before has had one of those soul-crushingly long games that goes on for an hour or more and which never seems like it’s going to end. Even if you have a huge advantage over the enemy team, they just turtle up on their towers and keep you from ever pushing for the win. Coming out on top of one of those games is the greatest thing that could ever happen to you that day, while losing one is massively disappointing.
Today, Curse and compLexity had one of those games. Clocking in at over 80 minutes, their matchup was the longest professional game of League of Legends ever played. It wasn’t the only record set today though – ROBERTxLEE grabbed the record for most CS in a professional game (719), while Quas managed to have the longest life in LCS history by going deathless. Despite its length, the game was anything but boring. Both teams pushed each other back and forth across the map, pressuring down mid in turns in what was one of the most drawn out mid-late game periods in LoL history. Finally however, it was compLexity that came out on top.
ROBERTxLEE was to thank for their victory. After he got taken low in the final teamfight of the game, compLexity’s marksman backed out of the melee and headed towards the botlane, moving immediately for the Nexus towers along with his support Bubbadub. With  Curse distracted by the rest of compLexity, ROBERTxLEE managed to take down both towers and head for the Nexus itself. A last-second inhibitor respawn almost prevented compLexity from taking the Nexus, but Westrice somehow got onto the weakened mid inhib and finished it off with a few autoattacks. Kiting the returning Curse members around the objective, ROBERTxLEE managed to end the game almost single-handedly and give his team the victory.
compLexity’s win might have been a foregone conclusion though. With the poke from both Ziggs and Lucian, in addition to Morgana bindings, it was easy for compLexity to siege up on Curse’s towers and bully down a pair of inhibitors. Even if Curse had won the last teamfight, they would have been hard-pressed to push for the win unless they either aced compLexity or had both inhibs still active. To compound issues, Voyboy was seemingly out of sorts in this game – his Command: Shockwaves missed more often than they hit, or only pulled in one member of compLexity instead of their whole team.
However, Curse certainly didn’t get stomped by compLexity. Cop’s Kog’Maw was an absolute monster in teamfights, especially thanks to the peel he received from his teammates. Thanks to great positioning, Curse’s marksman was more often than not able to carry his team through the midgame teamfights. In addition, IWillDominate allowed Curse to get through a somewhat rough early game – the threat of his Rengar appearing from stealth forced compLexity to play passively and kept them from snowballing their early advantages.
compLexity had no shortage of these advantages. Their dragon control was absolutely immaculate and they pressured down towers every time the opportunity presented itself. Curse meanwhile was far more lax about objectives, but did much better in securing the early kills. The difference in focus between the teams meant that compLexity held a gold lead for most of the game – only Curse’s good rotations kept them from falling down too early. However, it wouldn’t be enough by the end of the game. With Curse seemingly unwilling to contest Baron, compLexity was easily able to take the buff both times and use it to layer on the pressure. As Curse dug in their heels, it would take a desperate teamfight – and a desperate play by ROBERTxLEE – to end the game.
