Game of the Day: Copenhagen Wolves versus ROCCAT

By Helmight
It’s always the teams lower in the standings that bust out unusual champions. Just last week we had Curse’s IWillDominate breaking out Skarner for his first LCS debut. Prior to that, we’ve seen Cloud 9 experimenting with Rengar as a possible way for them to claw back to the top of the leaderboards. And now, we have Roccat picking one of the more unusual midlaners: Xerath. Though the Magus Ascendant was not key to their victory, he did assist the ailing team in pulling out their first victory of Super Week in a drawn-out game against the Copenhagen Wolves.
To be honest, sloppy play was the hallmark of both teams. Copenhagen and Roccat both had missed opportunities, missed skillshots, and simple mistakes that could have given them an advantage over their opponent. Copenhagen had it the worst, forfeiting objectives to Roccat that they could have easily taken if they were only more confident. At the end of the day, it was these missed objectives that that allowed Roccat to take home the victory, despite their own lackluster performance.
The early game went solidly for the Wolves. With a Renekton toplane against Irelia and a Lucian/Zyra combo against Corki and Morgana, Copenhagen already had a huge advantage against their respective lane opponents. Meanwhile, cowTard and Overpow should have had a relatively even lane thanks to the waveclear power of both Xerath and Ziggs – however, Overpow allowed cowTard to hit him with more Bouncing Bombs than he would have liked. An early back from Roccat’s midlaner gave Copenhagen the advantage all across the map.
And yet despite having a lead in every lane, Copenhagen hesitated about going for the first dragon of the game. The objective would have cemented their early lead, but instead the Wolves simply cleared the wards around it and backed off. A minute later, Roccat arrived at the pit and slew the dragon, taking the objective without a fight. Soon after that, first and second blood went Roccat’s way as well thanks to timely ganks by Jankos in the midlane. Though Copenhagen’s composition was winning the laning phase, their inability to secure the easy objective kept Roccat from falling too far behind.
It was a crucial mistake. Copenhagen would never get back to the dragon pit until much later in the game, and would only secure one out of six dragons that spawned. The inability to maintain a hold on the objective meant that Roccat had a constant stream of global gold flowing into their coffers, allowing them to keep the overall advantage. The Wolves were individually playing better than their counterparts, but Roccat’s objective leads allowed them to trade evenly in skirmishes.
Because of how close the game was, Copenhagen eventually made the call for Baron. However, indecisiveness again thwarted their efforts. The Wolves danced around the pit, unable or unwilling to commit to taking down the objective and allowing Roccat plenty of time to get into position themselves. A close teamfight sent both teams back to base to heal and respawn, but as they came back onto the Rift, the Wolves sent Woolite bottom to clear out minions. Seeing the Copenhagen marksman off in a distant lane, Roccat charged for Baron, securing it easily as Woolite desperately ran for the pit. Though Xaxus would go down to a well-placed ult from Woolite, both Unlimited and Airwaks lost their lives in the post-Baron fight, which ultimately yielded more of an advantage to Roccat.
Finally, desperate and pinned on their side of the map, Copenhagen went for a stealthy Evelynn initiation onto Roccat’s marksman. Though Airwaks was able to isolate Celaver and land a great ultimate, there was no one else to follow him in except Woolite. With a bit of support from Overpow’s ultimate and VandeR’s Black Shield, Celevar cleaned up the two kills and rejoined the rest of his team as they took down cowTard and YoungBuck as well. With only Unlimited left on the Wolves’ side, it was child’s play for Roccat to take down a pair of inhibitors and the Nexus.
